Demolition of Bradwell’s Court complete

18 August 2006

The first major phase of the transformation of the new Christ’s Lane shopping destination is now at an end as the demolition of the old Bradwell’s Court building is completed.

Demolition has been carried out within four months and the next phase will see the construction of the pilings for the foundations. A proportion of the demolished material will be recycled, being crushed and used for fill and piling mats in the new development.

Graham Thompson, Development Manager at Land Securities, the company behind the development of Christ’s Lane, said, ‘The demolition phase went smoothly and we’re pleased to be on schedule as we start the foundation work. The Christ’s Lane site sits in a sensitive area of the City, adjacent to the historic colleges of Christ’s and Emmanuel and SDC Construction have worked hard to limit as much as possible the disruption caused to our neighbours.

‘SDC has also had to be mindful of the archaeological investigations that were taking place concurrently, and worked closely with Cambridge University Archaeological Unit to ensure continued access and to avoid delay to both theirs and the archaeologists’ programmes.’

The archaeological work is also complete and details of the findings will be published shortly. Pilings for the foundations are expected to take six weeks to complete and during the autumn, concrete slabs will be laid and the steel framework will start to go up.

Christ's Lane

The Christ's Lane development is a distinctive retail-led, mixed-use scheme, which will respond to its setting in a conservation area, between the prestigious Christ’s and Emmanuel Colleges. The re-established historic street of Christ's Lane will become one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city providing a key link to the City Centre from The Grafton and the bus station.

The new Christ's Lane will comprise 8 shops, a restaurant looking over Christ’s Pieces and 15 apartments as well as featuring a new civic square and amazing public art. Pre-lettings have been agreed with fashion retailers Zara, H&M, Bank, and the restaurant group Giraffe.
