WORK STARTS ON THE CHRIST'S LANE SHOPPING DESTINATION
17 May 2006
Work in preparation for demolition and construction has started at Christ's Lane, where a new area of shops, public space and apartments is being created on the site of the old Bradwell's Court.
Attending the ‘ground-breaking’ ceremony were: Peter Cleary, head of retail development at Land Securities, the company behind the Christ’s Lane transformation; Francis Shiner, managing director of SDC, the company that has won the building contract for the project; Stephen Barton, senior bursar, Jesus College, and Dr Michael Halstead, senior bursar, Christ’s College.
Andrew Hilston, Development Manager at Land Securities comments: ‘The start of work on the site really does feel like the beginning of a bright new future for this special place.’
Christ’s Lane, which is pivotal within the City as a link between the historic centre and the bus station, has attracted intense interest from fashion and other retailers, with lettings to Zara, H&M and Bank already announced, and the restaurant group Giraffe taking one of its first out-of-London sites there.
Land Securities recently announced the change of name, together with a new branding and image for the development. The simple but striking logo is based on a traditional benchmarking symbol originating from the reference points made by Ordnance Surveyors. This symbol - a solid horizontal line underpinned by three arrow-shaped lines - was discovered carved into a block of stone on an outside wall of Christ’s College and is traditionally used to represent a high standard against which others can be judged.
The logo will soon be seen on hoardings around the site, and these will be used to give information on progress, both to the work and in terms of the great names to look out for as lettings continue.
