SDC wins historic Christ’s Lane contract

4 May 2006

Land Securities, the company behind the Christ’s Lane project, has awarded the building contract to SDC Construction Group.

With over 30 years’ wide-ranging construction experience and expertise, Bedford-based SDC will bring to reality the exciting vision for Christ’s Lane designed by architects Panter Hudspith.

SDC is responsible for a number of major building schemes in Cambridge, including those at Trinity, Corpus Christi and St Edmunds colleges, The Junction, the £6m residential scheme in Coleridge Road and the Babraham Institute. Nationally the firm has been recognised for its work in retail development including projects at Interchange Park Bedford, Milton Keynes Theatre District, Turner Rise Colchester and a 47,000 sq ft B&Q at St Neots.

Francis Shiner, Managing Director of SDC said, ‘Our company has a long association with Cambridge and we are delighted to continue with the City’s transformation, especially at such an historic location.’

Development Manager at Land Securities, Andrew Hilston said, ‘SDC has a good track record of quality and delivery, but particularly for sympathetic developments within existing neighbourhoods. It’s great to have them on board with us helping to rejuvenate this location in Cambridge.’

Christ’s lane, the new area of shops, public space and apartments is being created on the site of Bradwell’s Court. This site, which is pivotal within Cambridge as a link between the historic city centre and the bus station, has already let space to several retailers, including Zara, H&M and Bank. Recently restaurant group giraffe announced it was opening one of its first out-of-London sites there.
