CITY CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT’S NAME CHANGE PUTS IT ON THE MAP
March 16 2006
Cambridge shopping arcade Bradwell's Court, situated in the heart of the City centre, is soon to start a transformation into an exciting new mixed use area of shops, public space and apartments. As a result it has now found a new image and name – “Christ’s Lane”.
This name has been derived from the historic lane that once connected Christ’s Pieces to the City centre. As part of an exciting redevelopment this lane will be reopened and improved to provide a friendly and safe route to St. Andrews Street between Christ’s College and the new development.
'This decision reflects the way in which we are aiming to bring together the best of innovation and tradition,' says Andrew Hilston, Development Manager at Land Securities, the company behind the impressive new development. 'We plan to re-establish Christ's Lane as a destination in its own right, while also creating a thoroughfare between two key areas of Cambridge which will be much wider, brighter and more attractive than the current one.'
The high quality of the destination is also being reflected in its new brand. The 'Christ's Lane' logo is based on a traditional benchmarking symbol originating from the reference points made by Ordnance Surveyors. This symbol - a solid horizontal line underpinned by three arrow-shaped lines - was discovered carved into a block of stone on an outside wall of Christ’s College and is traditionally used to represent a high standard against which others can be judged.
'In both senses it is the right brand,' comments Andrew Hilston. 'We hope that Christ’s Lane will become a meeting point towards which the arrows indicate the way, and a quality benchmark for new retail in Cambridge.'
The 80,000 sq ft development, designed by award winning architects Panter Hudspith, comprises eight new shops, a café overlooking Christ’s Pieces and 15 apartments. Land Securities has already announced the letting of the three largest shops to fashion retailers Zara, H&M and Bank.
The new Christ’s Lane website has now been launched, and further details on the development can be viewed at www.christslane.co.uk
