Reopening of one of Cambridge's historic lanes is announced
Wed Dec 21 2005
As part of the exciting redevelopment on Bradwell’s Court Shopping Arcade, plans are in place to improve the linkage between Cambridge City Centre and Christ’s Pieces by reopening the historic Christ’s Lane in place of the current footpath through the parade.
Early next year, building work will commence to transform the current site into a new area of shops, public space and apartments. Christ’s Lane runs between the site and Christ’s College but is currently not accessible to the public; restoring this as a public walkway will create a more scenic, safe and pleasant route for pedestrians. The intention is to construct the area using high quality materials; the path will look very impressive yet reflect the traditional historic streets of Cambridge. It will be much wider and brighter than the relatively narrow and dark path currently in use.
‘The lane will eventually become a thoroughfare that will showcase some amazing public art, and will be a pleasure to use,’ says Rachel Trevillion, Development Manager at Land Securities, the company behind the exciting new development. ’It will be wide enough to allow access for emergency vehicles, but will be clear of all traffic.’
Whilst the redevelopment is in progress, a temporary pedestrian route will be constructed, providing a clean, well-lit and secure route. The temporary walkway will be maintained to a high standard throughout the duration of the work; the plans have been designed to ensure public safety and avoid disruption to the thoroughfare, which is well used as a connection between the City Centre, Drummer Street bus station and the Grafton Centre.
