Land Securities multi-million pound regeneration scheme for Cambridge gains planning approval
26 October 2004
Land Securities announces that Cambridge City Council has granted a resolution to approve the detailed planning application for its multi-million pound redevelopment of Bradwells Court, Cambridge.
The 100,000 sq ft mixed-use scheme designed by Panter Hudspith comprises eight shops, a café overlooking Christ’s Pieces and 15 residential apartments.
Peter Cleary, Head of Retail Development at Land Securities commented on the application,
“We are extremely pleased with this decision, having worked closely with the Colleges, the Council, the local community and other key stakeholders to ensure that the proposals meet the needs and future aspirations of Cambridge.
“With Bradwell’s Court we have met the challenge of integrating a large and diverse development into the urban grain of a historic city centre. We believe it will provide a much enhanced gateway into the city and become an important retail and leisure area in its own right.”
The design approach provides for high quality contemporary architecture within a historic setting and will deliver a rationalised and less cluttered space on St Andrews St, a new and vibrant public space in front of the Christ's Pieces frontage and will restore the historic Christ's Lane.
The development programme envisages building starting in early 2006 with completion in late 2007. This would result in Bradwell’s Court opening at the same time as John Lewis, the anchor of Grosvenor’s Grand Arcade scheme. Both developments will consolidate Cambridge as a premier retail and leisure destination.
